La Altagracia.- The director of the National Office of Public Protection (ONDP), Rodolfo Valentín Santos, reported this Wednesday the death of a man who had been in Seibo prison for more than 10 years despite being free since 2014, a situation that reveals the failure of the justice system that we see during a routine visit to the prison in Seibo.

Valentin Santos said in a statement that Gerardo Luis initially had the help of a private lawyer, but that lawyer later abandoned him and completely forgot about him, and he faced a long and painful wait in prison.

“It is unacceptable that someone is deprived of their liberty for such a long time without just cause,” Santos said. “This case highlights serious flaws in the prison system where people, especially the most vulnerable, are left aside and forgotten.”

He said that although Luis complied with the legal requirements for his release, the authorities (the Higuey prosecutor’s office, the director of the prison center and the judge who executed the sentence) did not act with the required speed and unreasonably prolonged his imprisonment.

“This is not an isolated case. “There are many others in our prisons facing similar situations. “Everyone’s constitutional and procedural rights must be respected under our Magna Carta and the Criminal Procedure Act.”

The Public Defence Department reaffirms its commitment to remain vigilant and proactive in protecting the rights of all citizens, especially those of vulnerable groups within the prison system.
