US President Joe Biden’s political dilemma was also a hot topic of discussion during the Australia US Leaders Dialogue in Washington this week, attended by Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marrs, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton, Assistant Defence Minister Matt Thistlethwaite and Opposition Home Affairs Minister James Patterson.
Mars spoke shortly after arriving in Washington this week, expressing his support for Biden and praising the global alliances his administration has built and his focus on the Indo-Pacific region.
“We’re very pleased about it, and we’re certainly very pleased about the Biden administration’s focus on the Indo-Pacific and issues that are of concern to Australia,” he said.
“We’ve seen strong American leadership … which is absolutely critical to the challenges facing the world today.”
Between conversations, Thistlethwaite acknowledged that the debate over the president’s fitness to be president is something the United States “cannot avoid,” but he added, “It’s a matter for the American people.
“The strength of our alliance has always been based on bipartisanship and working with any administration that occupies the White House. That tradition will continue,” he told the newspaper.
