MANILA: The Philippines has detected a new case of the swine pox virus, the first since December, the health department said on Monday (Aug 19), adding that it was awaiting test results before identifying the strain.

The DOH said the patient is a 33-year-old Filipino man with no travel history outside the Philippines.

Asked about the strain, spokesman Albert Domingo said: “We are awaiting the sequencing results and we will update you once they are available.”

“Symptoms began with a fever more than a week ago, and four days later, a noticeable rash appeared on the face, back, nape of the neck, trunk, groin, and palms and soles of the feet,” the Department of Health said in a statement.

The disease, caused by the mpox virus, causes flu-like symptoms and purulent lesions. It is usually mild but can be fatal, with children, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV, at higher risk of complications.
