Ali al Balushi and Mazoon al Alawi were named flag bearers for the Sultanate of Oman at the opening ceremony of the 33rd Paris 2024 Summer Olympics on the Seine River on Friday.

This year’s opening ceremony will be the largest in the history of the Olympic Games and the first to be held outside a stadium. More than 7,000 athletes from different countries will take part in a parade, riding 94 boats and ferries, from the Austerlitz Bridge on the Seine to the Jena Bridge, a total of 6 kilometers. More than 500,000 people are expected to watch the live broadcast in designated areas of Paris and nearby balconies and apartments.

French President Emmanuel Macron, IOC President Thomas Bach and other world leaders will attend the opening ceremony, which will begin at 8:30 pm Oman time (6:30 pm France time) and will also be attended by Omani officials, including Oman Olympic Committee President and Chef de Mission Shaikh Khalid bin Mohammed al Zubair, Undersecretary for Sports and Youth Affairs at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth Basil bin Ahmed al Rawas, Oman’s Ambassador to France Ahmed bin Mohammed al Oraimi and other members of the Oman Olympic Committee.

The Omani flag bearer will be joined by members of the sports delegation, representatives of the national team and technical and administrative staff at the opening ceremony, which will include the traditional parade of athletes, the lighting of the Olympic flame and various cultural performances reflecting French traditions, as well as fireworks, light shows and music performances.

The Omani sports delegation arrived at the Olympic Village on Thursday. The athletics and swimming teams joined the shooting team that arrived earlier on Wednesday. The administrative delegation has completed all necessary immigration formalities. The head of the Omani delegation, Ali bin Salim Al Busaidi, welcomed the national team representatives at the Paris airport and the Olympic Village.

Al Khatri prepares for the match at the Châteauroux shooting centre

Omani shooter Sayyid bin Ali al-Khatri began intensive training at the Chateauroux shooting center 200 kilometers south of Paris, with Italian coach Luca Marini as his coach. This is the first time that shooters at this year’s Olympics have been allowed to train at the venue more than 10 days before the opening ceremony.

On the other hand, the athletics and swimming teams will start training on Saturday, as they were unable to train on Friday due to road closures for the opening ceremony. Swimmer Issa Al-Adawy will be coached by Tunisian coach Amer Ben Roucha at the Paris Aquatics Center. Sprinter Ali Ben Anwar Barouche and runner Mazoun Ben Khalfan Alaoui will begin formal training at the Stade de France under the guidance of national coach Fahad Ben Khalfan Mishayhi.

Al Adawi will compete in the 100m freestyle on Tuesday, while Al Alawi will compete in the 100m on August 2, followed by Ali al Balushi who will compete in the same category for the first time on August 3 at the same venue.

Despite the tough competition, Omani athletes are committed to showcasing their prowess and breaking personal and national records.
