Saturday, August 10th, is a memorable day for the newly formed Nine-Nation Alliance.
The group successfully held a larger exhibition and fashion show than last year, “Imagination II”, themed “Ina eseru” (“Our Tradition” in Akawayo), at Black Magenta in Georgetown.
The one-day event, which commemorated the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples on August 9, featured an exhibition of authentic indigenous food, drink, arts, crafts, music and dance during the day and a fashion show in the evening. Stabroek Weekend observed that both events were well attended, with two of the main sponsors being Gold Target Export and the Guyana Tourism Authority.
Face painting and tattoos, part of indigenous culture, featured prominently in the composition of the costumes, as did fashionable necklaces and earrings made from beads and seeds, which complemented the ornate feather headdresses and brightly coloured hand-painted cottons. Among the audience was former Vice President and former Minister of Indigenous Peoples Affairs Sydney Allicock, who noted that showcasing their “strong heritage” brings a lot of value to Guyana’s indigenous peoples. He said the occasion was filled with “happiness and joy”, emotions that were much needed.
