This progress was made possible by the mobilization of local organizations such as the Committee for Monitoring and Alerts in Faleme (CVAF) and the Union of Horticultural Producers in Bakker (UPHORBAK), supported by the International Budget Partnership Senegal (IBP Senegal). These partners played a central role in raising awareness and advocating for the protection of Faleme.
IBP Senegal approves the decision but stresses the importance of taking additional actions. The implementation of the plan for the clean-up of the Falème River, as well as the plan for the rehabilitation of local infrastructure, is essential. It is recommended that these measures be incorporated into a sub-regional or cross-border framework, in collaboration with the Organization for the Development of the Senegal River (OMVS) and neighbouring countries.
IBP Senegal is committed to supporting the Senegalese government and local communities in implementing these important measures to ensure sustainable conservation in Falemé.
The ban on mining activities in the Falame River region marks a significant step forward in protecting the environment and water resources in the region. However, concrete actions and strengthened regional cooperation are needed to truly translate this decision into effective protection.
