The need for blood in hospitals: “Authorities must communicate well and adopt a permanent and popular strategy”, advises a health worker

According to the health worker, the demand for blood products is high during the rainy season, especially due to malaria and many other diseases that are prone to illness during this period. When we know that schoolchildren and students are an important group to meet the high daily demand in this area, the coincidence of holidays has a negative impact on the collection trend. Therefore, according to this health worker who has long been exposed to the real situation in hospitals and health institutions, a lot of good communication is needed to encourage people to donate blood. At the same time, he recommends the implementation of a permanent and popular strategy.

It is worth reminding that on the occasion of World Blood Donor Day 2024, June 14, the Minister in charge of Health, Dr. Lucien Robert Kargougou, urged Burkina Faso to mobilize for this “life-saving gesture” to achieve 235,928 bags of blood, mainly to help children suffering from anemia and women during childbirth.

According to the health worker, the need for blood is huge and constant. “Unfortunately, there are not enough permanent donors to meet the demand. (…). Often we find ourselves having to postpone interventions due to lack of blood. It is so painful to lose a patient like this, whom we could have saved,” lamented the health worker.

“It is the rainy season and the demand is huge, especially from malaria, accidents, injured children brought here from the interior, etc. We can easily lose people like this. It hurts. It is even more difficult because the collection centres everywhere don’t give, they all refer to Ouagadougou, and even in Ouagadougou you can ask for 40 bags and you can’t find even half of them. The authorities must communicate a lot about this issue through various channels, the media, communicate well and develop a lasting, popular strategy. For example, we can decide that a certain number of healthy people in each family will donate blood regularly. This is a system of solidarity that we must encourage. You have to donate blood because anyone can need blood and you don’t want to know whose blood it is; blood is for patients in need. It is true that there are bad people who do business around blood, which often puts off certain citizens, but with good communication with the population, for the happiness of everyone, many things can be avoided.
