In the clothing department of the Panevěž Central Market, an unexpected event was born – a real poetry competition.
On the initiative of the Panevėžys cultural and artistic platform “Fazė” for the eleventh time, this time in the Central Market with a special aura, which pulses with life every day and welcomes everyone into its arms – an unusual cultural phenomenon – slam – broke out.
Eleven contestants competed to read their works in front of the audience.
According to Karolina Černiavskytė, founder of the journal Fazė and founder of the Grand Slam, the double-digit number of readers shows that live poetry has taken root in Panevėžys and is a popular activity.
This statement was confirmed by the fact that nearly a hundred audience members gathered to listen.
“We were surprised at how many people continued to head to the garment section of the market – we didn’t even have time to bring in extra chairs and benches!” Carolina smiled.

A market without traders
Carolina said the market is the heart of every city. It is where life pulsates, where you meet relatives, friends or neighbors and see many colors.
“It’s like a city within a city. And the motto of the Central Market itself is “A city without a market is not a city”. I agree with that”, says K. Černiavskytė.
Organisers chose the market’s garment district as the slam stage for more practical reasons – not only did they want good acoustics, they also needed a roof in case it rained.
“However, once the event started, I realized that this section best describes Slam and the people who gather there – bright, eye-catching, and a little mysterious.” Carolina shared her impressions.
The onslaught came after sellers left and the market closed.
“This created an atmosphere of closure and mystery, which we gradually changed, reading our work and opening up to our audience,” the interviewer added.
Towards the wider world
K. Černiavskytė said that these poetry contests held under the sky of the Okstaytia capital can be described as “a lot of new faces!”
“I try to ask the question at the beginning of every Slam: ‘Who’s coming for the first time?’ My heart rejoices when I see a big bunch of hands. A new generation is born at Slam and we will eventually raise them before releasing them into the wide world. We are launching the current generation in the same way during the 11th Slam”, says the organizer of this unusual format event.
Karolina said that what was special about the slam was that the organizers asked each of the recent graduates a wish and reminded them that Panevėžys would always be their home and “Fazė” would always be their community.
“None of us like-minded people have stepped into the world of creativity and art. We would be happy if we contribute at least a little to this growth”, smiles K. Černiavskytė.
Uncomfortable topics
This time, Sibilė Petkevičiūtė, a future 10th-grader from the Vytautas Mikalauskas Art and Sports Hall in Panevěž, won the Grand Slam. She went down in history as the youngest winner of the Panevěž Grand Slam.
K. Černiavskytė said that the audience was impressed by Sibilė’s courage to work on extremely sensitive and painful topics.
“Feminism, violence, coercion – it’s not easy to sit down and listen to a text on these topics, but Sibyl managed to capture the audience’s attention and carry it to the end. What’s special about Slam is that it can talk about everything,” Carolina explains.
According to her, it is an opportunity to express, cry, get angry, and draw attention to the painful trauma in society.
“I was surprised by Sibilė’s maturity and mature attitude towards the subject of his work,” K. Černiavskytė admitted.

Pencils are not just for drawing
When Sibilė Petkevičiūtė started high school, she had pencils and drawing paper in her hands every day, starting in first grade. For a long time, it seemed that they were only for drawing.
However, more than a year ago, Sibilė realized that he could use the same pencil to create not only images, but also words.
“At first, I was looking for topics to write about,” the high school student recalls. – But after a while I realized: I write when I want to. And that’s what happened. One text after another, they kept getting better and more and more. “
“I think creativity and I met at the right time and in the right place,” the girl said with a smile.
This is Sibyl’s fourth Grand Slam. For her friend who accompanied her – the first.
“I participated in the first slam because a friend of mine participated,” says S. Petkevičiūtė. – I decided to go on stage myself and start a small tradition. This format is a great opportunity to perform in front of a very supportive audience, and you can say anything, because no one will judge you for your bad accent, lisp or difficult to understand topics. ”
what if?
When Sipilä raised her hand as a Grand Slam champion, she herself didn’t really believe at first that she would succeed.
“I thought, ‘What if?’, but it seemed unbelievable,” he admitted. – I really want to hug and thank everyone who supported me. The emotions and joy from the victory have faded a little, but I am still very grateful to everyone. “
Before arriving at the venue, Sybil was unsure whether he would attend. He added his name to the list of poetry readers almost at the last minute.
However, he read the first stage of the work in the evening – because he had not forgotten the “what if?” thought, but he did not expect to move on to the next stage.
Singing a different kind of love
Her reading of Sybil was about love—like most slam works.
“However, instead of being intoxicating, it’s anger-inducing, so we’re not sure what we’re angry about, but we’re angry,” S. Petkevičiūtė said.
“I finally understood, / I’m addicted to you. / Like the lungs to oxygen. / Like the stomach to food. / Like a baby to its mother’s breast. / Like I used to be to you. / Addicted. / Like a drug addict to marijuana. / Like an alcoholic to a bottle of “Bajoru”. / Like a seventh-grader in a mask. / I admit, I needed you. / Although to be honest. / I needed you. But you were not there. At that time, you were interested in other things, you could not help me, because you were not listening,” Sibilė aroused the interest of the audience at the Grand Slam.
An ocean of emotions
According to S. Petkevičiūtė, standing in front of an audience and reading your work is scary. But when her hands or legs are shaking, this feeling only drives her.
“That’s probably why I like to challenge myself. I’m interested in testing myself in front of a large audience. If everything happens unexpectedly or without long preparations – it’s better, more real. Emotions are more acute, adrenaline is more pumped, and shaking hands become great stage tools,” he confesses.
Even the Panevėžys Central Market, which has become a stage, is a very special place, Sibilė said.
“I think it brings back a lot of memories for most people. The tastiest buns are bought in one place, the most beautiful clothes in another. The fact that I went to the market with my friends this time, and not with my parents, was a bit strange,” S. Petkevičiūtė admitted.
But the girl assures that it is very nice to create new memories in such a place.
“The Grand Slam of the market is emotional. And the ‘market’ proposed through it acquires a completely different meaning,” smiles Sibilė.
Time for yourself
This summer, Sybil’s focus is on herself. During the school year, he was actively involved in the life of the gym, and now he tries to devote as much time as possible to himself: sports, photography, writing, finding new hobbies.
I still like painting, dancing and reading.
Sybil also liked music.
“There is definitely no lack of activity here, but I find peace in it,” she says. – Victory on the Panevěžské Grand Slam stage was another achievement, but life doesn’t stop, you need to strive for more. I try to keep my eyes on the future, on new opportunities. ”
“I am proud of my achievements. I want other people to be proud of what they do, to share it and not hide it, because we all have something to be happy about,” said S. Petkevičiūtė.
