The judges were fighting each other

Court documents detail tensions within Botswana’s judicial system, with internal communications between judges becoming angry, divisive and suggesting ill will.

In the latest report, Justice Reuben Lekorwe has questioned the appointment of Godfrey Radijeng as the acting chief justice.

The latter questioned Radijeng’s appointment as Justice Tshepho Motswagole had taken the state to court, questioning career development in the judiciary. In a letter to Radijeng, Lekorwe said: “My attention has been drawn to the contents of the letter to which you refer (letter dated December 22, 2022), in particular your statement that you had determined that the above matter was a case of exceptional public importance and therefore the judge appointed a panel of judges of which I am said to be a member.”
