The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has formally apologized for mistakenly introducing South Korea as North Korea at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The International Olympic Committee said on its official SNS account in South Korea on the 27th (Korea time), “We deeply apologize for the error in introducing Korean athletes during the opening ceremony broadcast.”

On this day, South Korea appeared at the opening ceremony as the 48th country, and the announcer in the hall made a major mistake and introduced North Korea instead of South Korea in French and English.

The 153rd entry then properly introduced North Korea as “Joseon” in both French and English, leading to the absurd situation of South Korea disappearing and only introducing North Korea twice.

The government immediately expressed strong regret to the Paris Olympic Committee and called on it to prevent similar incidents from happening again.

Second Vice Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Jang Mi-ran requested a meeting with IOC President Thomas Bach, and athlete leader Chung Kang-sun also demanded a quick response from the IOC and the Paris Olympic Organizing Committee.

The Korean Sports Council plans to meet with IOC and IOC officials the day after the opening ceremony to convey their protest and ask them to prevent similar incidents from happening again.
