A major figure in the customary world has passed away. Amabili Wahoulo was an iconic chef in Bélep with a vision of combining tradition and modernity. He joined in 2002 and resigned in 2020 because he felt that his promises were no longer respected, during a tribal conflict that left one person dead and seven injured.

Subsequently, the lodge of the great chief was destroyed by fire. A few days after the resignation, Belepu’s tribe expressed their support to the great chief Amabili Wahulo and asked him to be reinstated.

This Saturday, people paid tribute to him. Another tribute, this time from the National Council of Chiefs of Inaat Ne kanaky through its chairman, Hyppolite Sinewami Htamumu. He greeted “Work done at the level of their chiefdoms and throughout engaging with the requirements of traditional authorities at the national level”.

The members of the Commission recalled that Amabile Wahoolo was one of the great chiefs who signed and proclaimed the Kanak People’s Charter in Kwekala in 2014. He was also one of the founding members of the great chiefs of the National Council of Chiefs, Inatr Ne Kanaky, the Kanak National Congress to be held in Kanara in 2022.
