August 10, 2024. – Negotiators said the terms of the proposal would be announced later, following instructions from Colombian President Gustavo Petro.
The Colombian government’s chief negotiator with the ELN, Vera Grabe, announced that they had sent the ELN a “confidential” proposal, following instructions from President Gustavo Petro, to unfreeze the dialogue table so that the rebels could assess and answer us.
“Most importantly, it shows us the importance the government places on this process and the high value it holds in our context,” Grubb said.
Government representatives gathered the media at a virtual press conference, with the participation of Senator Iván Cepeda, who was also at the negotiating table.
“This is a proposal that aims to move forward, to promote dialogue and not just get stuck in discussions of facts and procedures. We hope that the ELN will respond as soon as possible to the objections that the president made public when he was considering it,” Cepeda said.
A bilateral ceasefire with the ELN expired on August 3 and cannot be extended. The armed group this week asked the government to remove it from the list of organized armed organizations (GAO) in order to restore the truce.
