At the end of the special ministerial meeting held on Friday, August 23, 2024, the government decided to declare a national state of disaster across the country due to floods caused by rainfall.
According to the latest official statistics, from the beginning of winter to August 22, 2024, 122 floods occurred in 17 regions and the Bamako region, affecting 7,077 households or 47,374 people, including 14,451 men, 13,576 women and 19,347 children. A total of 30 people died, including 12 in Segou, 6 in Gao, 5 in Bamako, 3 in Kutiara, 1 in Koulikoro, Kayes, San, and Kita, and a total of 104 people were injured.
If the Bamako region experienced 29 flooding incidents, a total of 4,639 people were affected, the Gao region was the worst hit, with 1,570 households affected and 9,936 people affected.
In response to the situation, the government has adopted a rescue organization plan based on the weather forecast that heavy rainfall is expected in the coming days. Strong measures are expected to be taken, including continuing to raise awareness of flood risks, cleaning water collectors, drains and intersections of water flow paths, or clearing buildings that block water flow paths from releasing water.
