To make this merger smoother, engineers at North Carolina State University came up with aWhite lightAt traffic lights, this will allow autonomous vehicles to help direct traffic and keep human drivers aware of what is happening.
Ali Hajbabaie, who is leading the proposal, said the idea is to use the computing power of the self-driving cars themselves to determine which vehicles are where.
“The white phase concept incorporates a new type of traffic signal so that human drivers know what they are supposed to do,” he said.A red light still means stop. A green light still means go. A white light tells human drivers to just follow the car in front of them.”.
Hajbabaie and his team published the article in the journal Computer-aided civil and infrastructure engineeringcreated a series of computer simulations to help visualize how the new traffic light system would work, with details subway.
The concept would allow self-driving cars to communicate wirelessly with each other and with computers that control traffic signals. The new traffic light system will be activated when enough self-driving vehicles approach an intersection.
The white light will indicate to people that the autonomous vehicles are coordinating their movements to get traffic through the intersection, and any non-autonomous vehicles simply need to follow the vehicle in front.
But for the most part, until nearly all cars are self-driving, standard red, yellow, and green lights will be used, and the system will operate as it has for decades. (Yo)
