The Czech Republic had a poor performance as they drew 1-1 with Georgia in Hamburg in their European Championship Group F match on Saturday.
With the result, Georgia and the Czech Republic retain their chances of advancing to the last 16 as at least the best third team in Group F, which also includes Portugal and Turkey, both of whom won, and they clash from 16:00 GMT.
Ivan Hasek’s side clearly dominated the match and had several chances, but were hampered by a number of saves from Valencia’s Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.
After losing 2-1 to Portugal in their opening match, the Czechs could not afford a second defeat and began to surround the defensive Georgian side in their own area.
Hasek’s players grew more nervous after Leverkusen striker Adam Hlozek had a goal disallowed in the 23rd minute.
After consulting VAR, the referee announced the penalty because the ball bounced off the arm of a Czech player.
The unwritten law of football dictates that whoever forgives will eventually pay the price, and that happened at halftime when Georgian star Kvicha Kvaratskhelia took a free kick that bounced off an opponent’s arm, earning a penalty in favor of the Georgians.
George Mikautadze scored his second goal of this European Championship with a 45+4 maximum penalty.
A defeat put the Czech team on the brink of elimination, but they avoided that thanks to a goal from striker Patrik Schick.
There was no forgiveness for the Bundesliga champions Leverkusen striker who hit the post with a shot from teammate Ondrej Lingel in the 59th minute.
The Czech team had several chances in the final half hour but failed to score.
Georgia also had a clear chance in the final moments of the game, but substitute Kvaratshelia’s Saba Lobjanidze missed the opportunity.
