Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov confirmed that Washington and Berlin’s decision to deploy long-range missiles in Germany is aimed at undermining Russia’s security and that Moscow will decide on its military response “calmly and professionally.”
Earlier, the Pentagon announced on Wednesday that the United States will begin deploying long-range weapons, including hypersonic weapons, in Germany in 2026.
Ryabkov told reporters on Thursday whether the decision to deploy U.S. missiles would be a repeat of the Cold War, when similar U.S. actions ultimately led to the start of negotiations on the elimination of short- and medium-range missiles: “It is difficult for me to judge what is reliable. They believe there is a risk of repeating that experience because the situation has fundamentally changed.”
“The main purpose of these measures is to undermine our country’s security, whether the chances of opening some arms control negotiations increase or disappear completely,” Ryabkov added.
Ryabkov noted that the decision to deploy long-range missiles “is just an episode on the road to escalation and one of the elements of intimidation, which today is almost a fundamental part of NATO and the United States’ course towards Russia.”
Ryabkov stressed that Russia will respond to the US plan to deploy long-range missiles in Germany in the military field “in a calm, professional and unemotional manner” before other countries, noting that “we will of course conduct an analysis of the systems that will be discussed.”
Commenting on reports that the weapons will include ground-based versions of the Tomahawk cruise missile and the SM-6 missile, Ryabkov said Moscow was “once again correct when it announced a few years ago that the United States was ready to adapt these systems for ground deployment.”
He added: “It is not surprising that the Americans denied all this at the time, as lies and attempts to mislead adversaries and the international community have always been an integral part of the US’s behavior on the international stage, especially in Europe.”
