The Ministry of Education has directed all parents and schools to register their students with the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF).

The Ministry of Education Secretary-General Belio Kipsang stressed the urgency of the registration process in a letter to institutions across the country. The Ministry of Education has set a registration deadline of August 26, 2024, requiring all students to be enrolled in the insurance plan before the start of the third semester in 2024.

In addition, the Ministry of Education has informed all regional and county directors of education that the enhanced Edu Afya package will be made available through SHIF.

The Edu Afya health scheme for students was discontinued in 2023. However, the Ministry of Health has now re-introduced the scheme under SHIF with an allocation of Ksh4.6 billion.

Under Section 26 of the Social Health Insurance Act, every Kenyan, including children, must be registered with the Social Health Insurance Fund.

In response to this, the Ministry of Health, through the Department of National Health Services and the Social Health Administration, has formulated an upgraded version of the Edu Afya welfare scheme under SHIF.

Parents are required to register their school-going children as their dependants. Registration can be done through USSD code or website.

The Ministry of Education said all children must be registered as dependents by the start of term three in 2024.

Parents can register through the website sha.go.ke, by dialing ‘147#’, or visiting afyangu.go.ke. Details are in the attached registration manual.

The Ministry of Health also provides an online version of the registration form on the Social Health Administration website. An electronic version is available at: www.sha.go.keIf you have any questions, parents can call the Social Health Administration call center on 0800720601 or send an email (email protected).

The Ministry of Education requires that this information be shared with all parents and schools to ensure that every student is registered with the Social Health Insurance Fund.
