The country does not intend to kill marumaru again

Provide updates to the Equipment Department on the health of large trees on local roads and the need to remove some of these trees when user safety is at risk.

Since November 2023, the Equipment Department has commissioned a technical study of trees on rural roads in the city of Papeete.

A total of 480 trees along the territory’s roads were mapped and monitored to understand their physiological and mechanical state.

This study has a dual goal for the government: protecting French Polynesia’s tree heritage and the safety of its people.

The marumaru slaughtering that has taken place in recent days in Papeete, on rue de la Clinique Paofai, rue de la Cannonière Zélée and even rue Dumont d’Urville, is the work of the Commune of Papeete, since they belong to it and are located on municipal roads. As part of the study commissioned by the plant management, the trees belonging to the municipality were not checked, since they are the responsibility of the Municipality of Papeete (the diagnosis in question only concerns the country’s roads).

The Minister of Major Works and Equipment, who is responsible for air, land and sea transport, recalled that the equipment department had to cut down heritage trees such as marumaru on January 1.^yes August’s interventions are only a last resort for the safety of users. Finally, the Minister stressed that these interventions are also accompanied by compensation measures for the replanting of trees and the recovery of wood from trees felled in the French Polynesian Crafts Center.
