As the Fiji Aquatics prepare for their upcoming match against Tonga, head coach Mick Byrne has stepped up the team’s training programme to ensure they perform at their best in their second match of the 2024 Asahi Super Dry Pacific Nations Cup.
The Fiji Flyers will use the bye week to focus on improving their fitness levels following a strong performance in their opening match last Friday. Coach Byrne stressed the importance of maintaining focus and energy during this period without competition.
“Yeah, I think it’s important to stay focused during the rest week. So we’ve just increased the intensity in training. When you can’t focus on the race at the weekend, you have to find other ways to stay focused and keep the energy up,” said Byrne after a tough training session in Nadi today.
Under the blazing Nadi sun, the team underwent a series of intense training sessions designed to improve their technique and stamina. This rigorous preparation is expected to be crucial in their upcoming match against Tonga (dubbed “Ikale Tahi”), who pose a formidable challenge to the team on their home turf.
“This is a chance for us to continue practicing for the game. As a national team, we don’t usually have much time to practice before a game,” added Byrne, stressing that this is a rare opportunity for in-depth preparation.
Fiji Seaplanes take on Tonga next Friday at 3pm (Fiji time) in a match that will be a crucial test of their fitness and tactical acumen as they bid to secure a place in the Pacific Nations Cup.
