The Centre Cannot Sustain: The Failure of Transforming Britain and the Shrinking of Political Thought

The latest disaster to befall the Change UK Party – Chuka Umunna’s decision to join the Liberal Democrats and change the party’s name for the third time – invites us to revisit the tragic fate of one of the most unfortunate parties in British political history.

It wasn’t long before Change UK was poised to revolutionise British politics. But there were many reasons why this didn’t happen: Heidi Allen proved an incompetent acting leader; the party failed to establish itself as the “party of Remain” and instead hesitantly tried to reshape the centre; it called itself the party of change but demanded that nothing should change as far as Europe was concerned. But the biggest reason was the result of the parliamentary elections in early May, in which Change did not take part. The centre of British politics had only one anti-Brexit party, and the strong performance of the Liberal Democrats in the parliamentary elections ensured that it would be that party. Since then, those who strongly supported Remain, like Nigel Farage’s supporters, have tended to support the Liberal Democrats.
