Tongan culture will be on full display this Sunday as members of the Central Region Chapter of Mdauku wa Mdauko Wa Atonga invite all Tongans to attend a gathering in Area 43, Lilongwe on Sunday.
The gathering was organized to plan and strategize for the organization’s annual national event scheduled to be held on August 14 in Nkhata Bay District.
Speaking to Nyasa Times, the organising secretary of Sunday’s gathering, Tasiyana Longwe, said they invited all Tongans to come, interact and brainstorm on how the annual event will be run this year.
“We have prepared several activities to add colour to the gathering on Sunday. We have traditional dances and performances by several artists. We will also be selling Tongan goods. All kinds of food that Tongans love will be on the menu at reasonable prices. So I hope all Tongans in the central region will come with their families to enjoy this day,” Longwe said.
National Publishing Limited (NPL) CEO Mbumba Banda will be the guest of honour at the event; however, also confirmed to attend Sunday’s gathering are prominent public figures such as retired Chief Justice Richard Banda, politicians Zikhale Ngóma, Vuwa Kaunda and Luke Theu, as well as prominent business leaders such as CMC Banda, Dr Takondwa Mwale, Kondwani Msowoya and Luke Theu.
Who are the Tongans?
The Tonga, also known as Lake Tonga or Nyasa Tonga, are an ethnic group living in Malawi, mainly in the northern part of the country around Lake Malawi (also known as Lake Nyasa). They are one of the main ethnic groups in Malawi, accounting for about 17% of the total population.
The Tonga people have a rich cultural heritage and long history in the region. They have traditionally been fishermen and farmers, taking advantage of the resources of the lake and the fertile soil of the surrounding area. They are known for their expertise in fishing, canoe building and aquatic trade.
Linguistically, the Tongans speak Chitonga, also known as Tongan, a Bantu language that is closely related to other languages in the region.
The Tongan people have a strong sense of community and cultural identity, with a rich tradition of storytelling, music and dance. They are also known for their exquisite crafts, especially wood carving and weaving.
