The Boys is more interesting than other series that claim to be on the fair and right side of the internet map. Its villains are mixed with its heroes, and its politics are confusing (far-right firecrackers try to warn her followers about Zionists, and Victoria, with her afro, looks like a parody of any liberal left-wing congresswoman). Netflix’s politically correct series sometimes reads like a Benton catalog, carefully suggesting that most of our enemies are usually male, white, and straight. In The Boys, on the other hand, violence comes from any gender, racial identity, or sexual orientation. In a way, this view is more inspiring to me than any fawning over identity politics.
The highlight is obvious: the fourth episode of the season, “The Wisdom of Time,” is one of the best episodes in the series’ history. The plot moves at a breakneck pace as Firecracker continues to fight the most important battle of the series, the battle of public opinion that takes place on television screens, and Francie’s secret past ruins his gay romance with handsome Colin, but the foundation of this wonderful episode focuses on the most important character of the series: Homelander. Homelander arrives at the laboratory where he was transformed as a child and decides to take revenge on every scientist who made him what he is in creative and sadistic ways that are both disgusting and wonderful.
This is the climax of a season of Homelander, in which Homelander, oddly, doesn’t do anything particularly interesting other than be the series’ arch-villain. Antony Starr gives everything he’s got, which is quite a lot, but he’s in the shadow of Karl Urban, who’s still sexy and filthy, and in my Zionist heart, Tomer Capone, who comes here as a queer, beautiful storyline that makes you question — Lord of the world, why did this wonderful Israeli actor need to temporarily relocate to kiss his son? Don’t the gay and Israeli communities deserve good things?
