The ECOWAS delegation was in Tokyo for a preparatory meeting for the 9th Tokyo Conference to be held in Yokohama, Japan in August 2025. It reiterated the importance of food security while stressing the importance of resilience to climate change and natural resources and improving agricultural productivity.
The meeting also set out plans to promote digitalization and stressed the importance of using digital technologies and artificial intelligence effectively and responsibly. She also stressed the importance of working with the private sector to solve social problems.
At the bilateral level, Damtien Tchintchibidja, accompanied by Director of External Relations, Jerome Boa, and Presidential Adviser, Mambury Njie, held a working meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs, Kiyoto Tsuji.
The Vice President briefed the Minister of State on the latest developments in the ECOWAS region and highlighted the priority areas for the regional bloc, such as infrastructure, agriculture, digitalization, renewable energy, trade, investment, empowering young people and women, and peace and security. She stressed that these areas require the support of strategic partners, one of which is Japan.
She also stressed that the TICAD mechanism must bear in mind the principles of subsidiarity and complementarity when dealing with regional economic communities in order to achieve tangible results and have an effective impact on Africa’s development.
Kiyoto Tsuji reiterated Japan’s willingness to help and strengthen bilateral cooperation with Cdao, while looking forward to participating in the 2025 Tokyo Conference.
