Vladimir Guerrero Jr. extended his hitting streak to 22 games in the first inning, tying a career best, but Oakland starting pitcher Osvaldo Bido powered through the rest of the way to help the Athletics beat the Toronto Blue Jays 1-0 on Saturday.
Brent Rooker’s two-out homer in the sixth inning off Toronto starter Yariel Rodriguez (1-5) was enough for Oakland (49-69) to tie the series with the Blue Jays (54-63).
In front of 34,312 fans at the Rogers Centre, Rooke hit a lofted drive over the top of the left-field wall, his 21st of the year.
Bidot (3-3) allowed two hits in six innings, walked one and struck out five. Bidot hit a fly ball to the right infield to Ernie Clemente at the top of the second inning and did not allow another hit.
He struck out 15 of the 16 batters he faced and hit Leo Jimenez in the fifth.
The Blue Jays failed to get a runner to second base.
Guerrero got one hit with four outs. He hit a big single to right in the first inning, was hit by the catcher in the fourth inning, was hit by Osvaldo in the fourth inning, and was hit by Osvaldo again in the sixth inning.
In the ninth inning, he struck out with one out and a runner on first base.
Guerrero extended his winning streak by scoring his fourth straight game in the first inning.
Rodriguez pitched 5 2/3 innings. After Rooker’s home run, Shea Langeliers hit a third single and Rodriguez was knocked out of the game.
Langlis added another single in the ninth to complete a 4-for-4 performance.
The Athletics ended an eight-game streak without a double play. Toronto catcher Brian Severn led off the third inning and Spencer Horwitz was hit by a pitch in the seventh, and the Athletics scored two runs with one inning to go.
Scott Alexander, Tyler Ferguson and Mason Miller played well in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, respectively, to keep the Athletics in the two-hit shutout. Miller got his 17th save.
Big Smoke
When Clemente struck out in the fourth inning, his streak of 35 consecutive scoreless at-bats ended, the second-longest in Major League Baseball.
The 28-year-old right-handed hitting infielder has moved up to fifth in the batting order thanks to his recent offensive performance.
Since June 12, the Rochester, N.Y., native has hit .306 (48-for-157) with 11 doubles, four homers and 23 RBIs.
On Deck
Chris Bassitt (9-10) will start for Toronto in the final game of a three-game series against Oakland on Sunday. The Athletics will send left-hander JP Sears (9-8) to face him.
