The 192,000 flowers planted last month ushered in September

Spring has begun and Cochabamba is ready to display its colorful floral cloak.

Last month, the Municipal Green and Alternative Recreation Corporation (Emavra) planted at least 1.92 lakh flowers at different public places.

Emavra manager Milton Copa explained that some of the flower varieties planted are still in bud stage and he hopes they will reach their most gorgeous state on September 21.

This month has a dual significance for the citizens of Cochabamba, as it marks the beginning of spring, but also the anniversary of the department.

These important dates inspire Emavra employees to go all out to grow the most beautiful flowers, some of which are even imported.

The plants include lantana, petunia, rose, gazania, altenia, periwinkle, dwarf sunflower, hanging petunia, pansy and marigold, among others. All “will show their joy, color and beauty,” Copa said.

In spring, the temperature and humidity of the environment create the perfect climate for flowers to flourish.

Although people will be able to admire these species in all the green areas of Cochabamba, the emblematic floral location will be the Plaza Julio León Prado, which will open on September 4. Copa foresees that two giant structures in the shape of peacocks will be placed there, each of which will house at least ten thousand flowers in its tail.

All of this magnificent arsenal is incubated in the municipal nursery, where staff plant species according to the different seasons of the year.

Emavra manages more than 400 hectares of green space in Cochabamba. Every day, in addition to flowers, they plant 800 shrubs and 300 trees. “The key is that everything that is planted must be popular.”
