Nikorndej Balankura, a spokesman for Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said in a statement that government and bank officials on Wednesday discussed “transactions that may be related to the purchase of weapons and military supplies and the government of Myanmar.”
He said the Bank of Thailand and the Anti-Money Laundering Office “will jointly form a special task force to investigate these transactions.”
He did not provide a specific timeline for the investigation.
The coup ended a brief attempt at democracy and plunged the Southeast Asian country into chaos.
Across the country, the junta is battling existing ethnic armed groups as well as the pro-democracy People’s Defense Forces.
