BEIJING: Tesla on Friday released a software upgrade for its in-car navigation system in China, introducing new features such as showing lane markings on its maps that correspond to actual lanes on the road.
The company announced the update on its official WeChat account, adding a host of new features to its latest over-the-air upgrade that it claims will reduce users’ reliance on smartphone apps while driving.
Tesla did not specify the provider of lane-related mapping services, but the official Shanghai Securities News reported on Friday that Baidu was the mapping supplier.
Baidu first announced the release of its V20 Baidu Maps in April and listed Tesla and Huawei as one of the map’s clients. Baidu has been Tesla’s navigation map provider since 2020.
Baidu Map V20 introduces lane-level navigation, a feature the company says can provide detailed road information and lane suggestions to human drivers to enhance driving safety and experience.
Chinese users have complained on social media about Tesla’s in-car navigation maps, saying they are not as detailed as those on smartphones. Tesla China has not yet commented on the matter.
Tesla, which uses only cameras as sensors for its self-driving technology, is rolling out its “Full Self-Driving” (FSD) software system in China, which has recently made progress as the company prepares to register the technologically advanced feature with authorities, Reuters reported last month.
Unlike HD maps, which can collect more detailed and sensitive geographic information as additional sensors for self-driving cars, navigation maps have been widely used in China to provide traffic information to human drivers.
