Telegram CEO Pavel Durov was reportedly arrested at an airport near Paris as part of a preliminary investigation into the app’s lax regulatory approach and failure to combat criminal activity. Telegram was also accused of not cooperating with police. Durov was released today.
Telegram previously issued statements on its official news channel and Platform X saying Durov “has nothing to hide” and that “it is absurd to claim that the platform or its owners are responsible for the abuse of the platform.”
“Telegram respects EU law, including the Digital Services Act. Audits are in line with industry standards and are being continuously improved,” the statement said. Durov was detained after arriving at Le Bourget Airport on a private plane. The investigation includes the app’s failure to combat drug trafficking, child sexual abuse material and fraud, according to the documents.
Telegram is one of the most popular social networks in the world and is widely used in Europe and parts of Asia. Durov said earlier this year that the app has nearly 1 billion active users per month. End-to-end Encryption and support for groups with tens of thousands of members, allowing for large-scale sharing of information and uncensored content.
NPR reported that the Paris prosecutor’s office would release a statement on Monday. “We are awaiting a quick resolution to this situation,” Telegram said.
