French news channel LCI reported that Telegram founder Pavel Durov was detained as he stepped off a private business jet at Le Bourget Airport in France.
The 39-year-old entrepreneur was accompanied by his bodyguard and a woman. Pavel Durov arrived directly from Azerbaijan and was registered on the FPR (wanted criminals list).
According to conflicting reports in the Russian media, Pavel Durov attempted to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Baku. Some media outlets reported that he was rejected, while others reported that the meeting did take place. However, its purpose was not disclosed.
According to French media reports, Pavel Durov was detained by the Air Transport Gendarmerie, who showed him a search warrant issued by OFMIN (Office Minor), the French national judicial police, based on some kind of preliminary investigation.
Investigators informed the owner of Telegram of the arrest warrant and took him into custody. He will appear before an investigating judge this Saturday evening, and the next day, August 25, he is likely to be charged with a series of crimes: terrorism, drugs, conspiracy, fraud, money laundering, cover-up, maintenance of pedophilia-related crimes. The news was reported by the LCI TV channel.
According to French TV channels, French law enforcement agencies believe that the refusal to cooperate with the authorities and the services provided by Telegram (disposable numbers, encryption…) make Durov an accomplice in crimes related to drug trafficking, pedophilia, and fraud.
By the way, the former Russian developer and founder of VKontakte received French citizenship in 2021.
However, Pavel Durov later declared himself persona non grata in France. The businessman frequently travels to the UAE, former Soviet states and South America, but rarely to Europe and avoids countries where Telegram’s practices are under investigation.
