The Class 12 dropouts in Telefomin district of Sandaun will get a second chance to study at Parul University in India.
This was made possible through an agreement signed yesterday between Telefomin Open member Solan Mirisim and Parul University.
Next year, about 40 students from the remote Telefomin County in Papua New Guinea will go to study at Parul University in India.
This was announced by Telefomin MP and Minister of Works and Highways Solan Mirisim.
He said his priority is education and he has been providing financial assistance to students.
“I have been providing K2-3 million per year to support education in the region since 2012,” he said.
“I have also signed a memorandum of understanding with a few teachers to allow them to go to college. This is a five-year project and I have sent 300 to 400 students to college,” said Mr Mirisim.
With the number of school dropouts and unemployment increasing in Papua New Guinea, Parul University offers this scholarship to provide Papua New Guineans with a second chance to study in India.
More than 100 Papua New Guinean students have gone to study at Parul University in India under the 50% scholarship scheme since 2023, and more are expected to go next year, including students from Telefomin.
After completing their studies, they are eligible to work in Papua New Guinea or other countries.
The full annual study fee is K25,000, but if you receive a 50% scholarship, you will need to pay K11,000.
