Linda Noskova won her first WTA Tour title by defeating Lulu Sun 7-6(6) 6-4 in the Monterrey Open final on Saturday, giving her a huge boost ahead of the US Open.

The Czech player ranked 35th in the world upset American second seed Emma Navarro in the semi-finals, avenging her first-round defeat to Sun Yang at the Cincinnati Open two weeks ago. She will face world No. 31 Yulia Putintseva in the first round of the US Open on Tuesday.

Noskova started steadily and broke Sun Yang’s first serve, but the New Zealand player broke back to keep the score level and the game went into a tiebreak.

The 19-year-old Noskova then saved two set points and took more than an hour to win the first set.

In the second set, Noskova capitalised on the New Zealander’s unforced errors to break again and hold on for a crucial advantage, securing her victory in one hour and 58 minutes in the northern Mexican city.

Noskova said: “I was not in a very good mood when I went into this match, but the match changed me a lot. It was a very good match for me.”

“The environment and opportunities I have here are incredible for me and my career, really happy that I won here and maybe I’ll come back next year.”

Despite the defeat, the 23-year-old Sun Yang has captured the attention of the tennis world by making it to the quarterfinals of the Wimbledon Championships, and will enter the top 50 for the first time ahead of her US Open debut against Lucia Bronzetti on Monday.

“Thanks to my team, it was a great week for us. Even though I lost, it was still a great week,” Sun Yang said.
