Botswana’s Letsir Tebogo produced a historic performance to become the first African sprinter to be crowned Olympic champion in the 200m, making it a double after he deprived American Noah Lyles of his 100m title at the Paris Games at the Stade de France on Thursday.
The 21-year-old Tebogo won in 19.46 seconds with a tailwind of 0.4m/s, setting a new African record. He beat another American, Kenny Bednarek, who won the event in 19.62 seconds, while Noah Lyles came in third in 19.70 seconds, just days after winning the 100m.
Prior to that, Namibia’s Frankie Fredericks won two Olympic silver medals at the same distance in 1992 and 1996. Lyles, who was unbeaten in the 200m before Paris since winning bronze at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, has now left the wheelchair track.
With the win, Tebogo became the sixth world-class runner ever in the event. A year ago in Budapest, he also made history by becoming the first African to win a world medal in the 100m, finishing silver behind Lyles.
As a world track and field talent, Tebogo caused a sensation by winning the 100m World Junior Championship and 200m World Junior Vice Champion twice in 2021 and 2022.
