Teachers serving in Jiwaka Province are now warned to be diligent in discharging their duties and produce results as the process of selecting teachers in the province is very stringent.
Jiwaka Education Department Chief Advisor and Education Committee Chairman Andrew Kuk disclosed this at the recent Education Committee meeting in Mintz.
Mr Kuk said all teachers from primary to secondary schools, including those in all TVET schools, should be encouraged to excel if they want to retain their current teaching positions.
He revealed that many teachers, although they have been offered positions, do not serve in schools.
“Our process for selecting teachers next year will be based on merit and performance, so all teachers will have the responsibility to improve or be fired,” he said.
Mr Kuk stressed that while more teachers are graduating from colleges and universities, teaching positions are limited.
He added that teachers found absent from classes for three days or more would be suspended without pay unless they had valid excuses.
