Teachers are set to return to classrooms next week after more than two months on strike.
Education Minister Priya Manickchand announced this on her Facebook page earlier today.
The Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) and the Ministry of Education (MoE) reached an agreement on Friday.
In the agreement, GTU and MoE agreed on several conditions.
It is stated that the strike will end within two working days and all teachers/educators will fully resume work without any harm to either side.
Furthermore, the agreement stipulates that no teacher/education worker will lose their services and they will return to their respective posts before the strike and will not be transferred after resumption of work.
Furthermore, the agreement states that if any ruling is made in the current legal proceedings between the parties, the status quo ante shall prevail.
“Once teachers/educators fully resume work, mediation will commence to determine whether the GTU’s proposed timeline for 2019-2023 or the MOE’s 2024 and beyond should be part of the new multi-year agreement,” it then read.
The agreement was signed by GTU President Mark Lyte, GTU Secretary General Coretta McDonald, Ministry of Education Permanent Secretary Shannielle Hoosein-Outar and Chief Education Officer Sadam Hussain.
