Vanesa Palma, a teacher from Chan Chen village in the Corozal district, is upset and disappointed that the report she filed with the police was leaked to the media. Our newsroom spoke to Palma tonight and she refused to be interviewed by us, saying that she never authorized the police to make her statement public. For her part, Palma was the victim of another creative scam on the World Wide Web. The 38-year-old teacher lost five thousand six hundred dollars after choosing to deposit her money into what she thought was a good investment opportunity. In her complaint, Palma saw an advertisement for the investment shared on the Facebook page of her friend Rosendo Urbina. She contacted the company, Astrid Global Investment, and was put in touch with a man named Austin. After seeing video testimonials from people who claimed to have made money from investments, as well as several package options, Palma took the bait and deposited a thousand dollars, counting on her making a profit of ten thousand dollars. She was then asked to invest more money to protect her account and was asked to invest another sum to process and deposit funds. At one point, Palma deposited as much as $5,600 in a two-week period before finding himself blocked by the scammers.
The complexity of this case is that Palma is allegedly dealing with overseas scammers who the Belizean authorities are not really equipped to handle. Her chances of recovering the money she lost are almost zero. After her story was posted online, one man shared that he had a similar experience about four years ago, while another said that the scammers tried to seduce him but he did not give in. As for the feedback in the court of public opinion, many are bullying the victim and blaming her for the predicament she is in. As we noted, the victim refused to be interviewed.
