Tanzanian police are investigating the alleged gang rape of a young woman by five men in a viral video that has sent shockwaves through the East African country.

Security forces have not yet commented on the allegation that the suspects are soldiers.

Police said the investigation was “progressing well” but did not confirm any arrests had been made.

They denied the young woman died following her ordeal and called the claims “false”.

“The young lady is very safe,” police said. In a statement released on X.

In another post, police warned the public not to share the video online “to avoid torturing the victim and her family”.

The video of the alleged gang rape began circulating online on Sunday, causing outrage in Tanzania, a deeply conservative society.

The country is grappling with rising rates of gender-based violence, some of which go unreported, according to local media reports.

It is unclear when the video was filmed, but the victims are reportedly residents of Yombo Dovya, a suburb of the commercial city of Dar es Salaam.

Police appealed for calm as investigations continued, adding: “Details regarding this incident will be released once we have completed the legal process.”

Human rights groups and social media users called on authorities to take swift and decisive action.

The Center for Law and Human Rights warns “Ignoring these problems will only lead to them occurring more and more in our society.”

Lawyers from the Tanganyika Bar Association condemned the action as a “serious violation of national laws and social norms”.

Interior Minister Hamad Masauni reportedly said the suspect “had been” arrested but did not provide further details.
