Bamba moved from Paris Saint-Germain to Dunfermline, then to Hibernian, before joining Sven-Goran Eriksson’s Leicester City in 2011.
Bamba posted a tribute to Eriksson on social media following his death earlier this week, calling the Swedish coach “not only a wonderful person, but also the best coach I have ever had and someone who inspired me not only in my journey as a player but also as a coach.”
Bamba joins Leeds United after stints at Trabzonspor in Turkey and Palermo in Italy.
He later achieved perhaps his finest achievement at Cardiff City, becoming a fan favourite after being signed on a free transfer by Neil Warnock in 2016.
He scored on his debut against Bristol City and played a key role in the club’s promotion to the top flight the following season.
He made his Premier League debut with Cardiff City, contributing four goals in the Welsh club’s only season in the top flight under Warnock.
The club announced in January 2021 that Bamba, then 35, was undergoing treatment for cancer, with the club saying he was “universally admired by his teammates, staff and supporters in the Welsh capital”.
Four months later, he returned to action and announced he was cancer-free after chemotherapy.
The following month, Bamba was released by Cardiff City, and he then joined Warnock again and joined Middlesbrough in August 2021.
He has previously described the veteran manager as a “father figure”. Warnock has also insisted the defender is “slightly better” than Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk, but has had to remind him during games “not to try to be Beckenbauer”.
