Local Afghan media reported that the Taliban whipped two people in Panjshir province in northeastern Afghanistan.
The media reported from the Taliban Supreme Court that a man and a woman were whipped 15 times yesterday for alleged “illicit extramarital relations.”
The caning was said to have been carried out in public.
Yesterday, local Taliban officials flogged more than 60 people in Sar-e-Pur province.
The Taliban Supreme Court issued a notification stating that 48 men and 15 women were sentenced to death at the stadium in the presence of the governor and other officials.
The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan office condemned the action today on Channel X or former Twitter, referring to the flogging of dozens of people.
Afghanistan’s compliance with its international human rights obligations is highlighted below.
Human rights advocates have previously harshly criticized the Taliban for these punitive measures.
At the beginning of their rule in the second half of the 1990s, the Taliban used similar punishments against known criminals.
Last year, the United Nations called on the Taliban to end such punishment.
