Two journalist support groups reported the arrest of freelance journalist Mohammad Yar Majrooh in Kandahar province.
The Afghan Information Centre said in a statement today that the journalist was arrested by the Taliban in Kandahar province. The groups called for the immediate and unconditional release of Mr. Majrou.
The Afghan Journalists Support Group (ACJP) also issued a statement on Twitter condemning the illegal detention of Majiru.
The organization called on the Taliban authorities to respect freedom of expression and release the wounded immediately and unconditionally.
Taliban officials have not yet commented on the incident.
Since the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan on August 15, 2021, there have been multiple reports of arrests and abuses of Afghan journalists.
Although the Taliban claims they respect journalists’ rights within the framework of Islamic law, many journalists accuse the Taliban of imposing severe restrictions on their activities.
