The Taliban’s highest court said a woman was beaten in Kandahar for “running away from home”.

The woman was sentenced to 39 lashes and two years and six months in prison on Thursday, the Taliban Supreme Court said in a statement.

The linked announcement does not explain the details of the charges against the woman.

The statement said officials and staff of the Taliban government’s Appeals Court and the public attended the meeting.

The practice of Taliban courts carrying out public executions or corporal punishment has been criticized by international human rights groups, but Taliban officials have consistently defended their actions and said they are enforcing Islamic law.

In the latest case, Amnesty International and the UN Human Rights Office called the punishment a violation of international human rights law and called for the process to be stopped.

The Taliban have publicly flogged hundreds of people, both men and women, since returning to power in Afghanistan, according to a United Nations report.
