“There were 11 tanks in total and we had a 12th tank from the Hiva Vaevae ‘Āarea. There were about 2,000 young people performing with songs we wrote especially for this event” Patricia Teriiteraahaumea, president of the Union of Polynesian Youth (UPJ), explains.
For five weeks, young volunteers from various cities have been working hard to organize this grand event. “This was an extraordinary experience because we organized the event in record time. If Carnival is a unifying event that fosters cohesion and commitment among young people, it can also highlight Tahitian culture, since the theme proposed by UPJ is “Myths and legends of our community and sports traditions”. “We believe that our young people need space to express themselves and what better way to let them express themselves than by asking them to re-enact the myths and legends of their community. And we force them a little bit, but they will understand it later! They are also asked to integrate a Tuaro Ma’ohi, because it is part of our ancestral traditions and it bridges the gap between sports and youth, which is vital” said Minister of Sports and Youth Nahema Temarii.
