Pago Pago, American Samoa— Swimmer Micah Masei qualified to represent American Samoa in the 100-meter breaststroke on the first day. Micah is the first swimmer to represent American Samoa in two Olympic Games.
In April, Mika won the gold medal in the 50m breaststroke and the silver medal in the 100m breaststroke at the 8th Oceania Swimming Championships 2024 in Gold Coast, Australia. At the 17th Pacific Games 2023, Mika won the bronze medal in the 100m breaststroke and the silver medal in the 50m breaststroke. Mika also competed in the 2023 World Aquatics Championships held in Fukuoka, Japan a year ago and the 2024 World Aquatics Championships held in Doha, Qatar in February this year.
Mika currently holds the American Samoa long distance national record in the 100m breaststroke with a time of 1:04.64. He broke his own record of 1:04.93 set at the Tokyo Olympics.
After the Tokyo Olympics, Mika took an 18-month break and returned to swimming, completing a master’s degree in finance at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where he also swam competitively as an undergraduate.
Accompanying Micah was coach Bess Lund, who works as a physical education teacher at American Samoa Community College and volunteers her time and expertise as a national coach for the American Samoa Swimming Association.
The squad arrived at the Paris 2024 Oceania training camp in Divonne-les-Bains on July 14 and will stay there for 10 days.
Mika said he is still trying to adjust to the situation and the time difference.
“Training camp has been going well so far and there is a great group of athletes here to train with.
“The surroundings are beautiful and the people are very friendly and welcoming.”
