MBABANE — “We will not go back to work until everyone gets paid.”
The statement was made by the Chairperson of the Duty Committee, Dr Zabenguni Mkhatshwa. Mkhatshwa said more than 50% of the staff on call had confirmed receiving the money. She said this was reassuring news as many more were confirming receiving the money. The chairman said they would not work overtime until everyone received their due pay. She said they were willing to work overtime even if the last person to receive the allowance received it just minutes before 5 p.m. Meanwhile, it was a challenging night for nurses working in the country’s hospitals as there was no doctor in sight. Some of the hospitals facing this challenging situation include the Mbabane Government Hospital and the Hlatikuru Government Hospital.

The reporter went to Mbabane Government Hospital to observe the situation. The hospital was very busy after get off work, especially after 9 pm. The nurses who were seen in the emergency room were assisted by the head nurse, however, she left them and told them that they knew where to find her if they got stuck. The reporter observed that most of the patients receiving treatment did not need surgery, which reduced the burden on medical staff and avoided the occurrence of crises. The maternity and gynaecology department also managed to get through the crisis. Saneliso Mavuso, deputy secretary general of the Swaziland Democratic Nurses Union, confirmed that they had received a report that the two hospitals were required to follow regulations to engage with the head nurse when dealing with difficult situations.
Mavuso said the nurses had done their best and there were no casualties. He said the medical staff together with the head nurse managed to handle the situation and did not let the patient die. However, he pointed out that some senior medical officers (SMOs) of the hospital promised to lend a hand whenever the nurses were in trouble and needed their help.He said the situation was inconvenient and as an organization, they felt that the health sector was one of the neglected sectors. “We are the most neglected industry in this country, but it shouldn’t be that way.”
Mavuso said the health sector is critical and needs to be given due attention, especially as they are responsible for looking after the health of the country’s economic driver. He said even if the government may be in trouble, the health sector should be the last to be affected.
