The Island Donation Service (IDS) continues to work with Adrian Martinez of the Belize National Blood Transfusion Service to continue blood donations. We have been able to authorize the release of 7 pints of blood since April 6th. Two of the three patients have recovered and have been released from the hospital. One of them is a young 21-year-old from Belize City who is back at the hospital awaiting another pint of O-.
Both the BNTBS and IDS agree that it is best to build up our island’s reserves through regular blood drives to minimise the need for emergency blood donations.
One of our most recent and significant goals was to develop an emergency blood donation program for Ambergris Caye residents. We also decided that we shouldn’t wait for an emergency to happen. Instead, we set a designated number so that when our island reserves drop to 5 pints above the limit, the team will begin planning for an emergency blood donation. This way no one has to risk their lives waiting, and it also helps IDS maintain its supply.

IDS recognizes both the challenges within the system and the difficulties faced by patients and their families. We are working to ease the burden on patients and families by assisting in finding the blood they need for a planned surgery or emergency.
● Reduce the stress on patients and their families caused by IDS assisting in finding blood.
● Helping young people. We have several young people who are struggling to get the blood they need, and they are still teenagers.
● The sooner we help patients get blood, their hospital stay will usually be shorter, thus reducing the financial burden.
As for the system, Tacogirl, one of the founders of IDS, has witnessed public dissatisfaction and outcry against change over the years.
To help the system, IDS has a slow and steady plan to increase the blood reserves in all regions starting with recruiting blood donors and organizing successful blood drives across the country. One of our main goals is for all regions to build stronger blood reserves for their people and country.

Take part – Belize District Blood Donor Challenge for World Blood Donor Day 2024. The country is stepping up to help meet the need. Donors are following our Facebook page and signing up daily. We have people from Cayo and Corozal ready to donate blood. Unfortunately, our information also reflects that the need for blood in the country is also growing too fast.
We will assist people to donate from now until June 14th or until all needs are filled. We need donors nationwide urgently!
