According to a recent survey, Macau residents have a relatively positive opinion of Hengqin. Local mediaThe survey was conducted by the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Research Center of the University of Macau from April to May this year.
The survey involved 1,0001 respondents, who were asked how they felt about living in Hengqin, with a score of 1 to 7, with an average score of 4.1. Nearly 700 of them lived in Macau, and about 300 already lived in Hengqin.
Although the Macau respondents rated Hengqin at only 3.6 out of 7 (half of the respondents said they would not consider moving there), the respondents who actually lived in Hengqin rated Hengqin more positively, at 5. Respondents who prefer to live on the island said that housing prices are cheaper, the cost of living is relatively low, and there are more job opportunities. Respondents who do not live on the island said that commuting to Macau for work is one of the main reasons for not wanting to relocate.
Nearly 15% of the respondents currently living in Hengqin said they were reconsidering whether to move out. They said that “the inconvenience of living in Hengqin or the lack of supporting facilities” was a major disadvantage of living there, in addition to missing Macau.
The UM team suggested that the Macao Special Administrative Region government should strengthen efforts to promote the integrated development of Macao and Hengqin, increase its understanding and familiarity with Macao residents, and improve the living conditions of Macao residents, including in terms of social services and industries.
