Supreme Court sets up working group to reform appointment system

The extraordinary plenary session was convened following complaints of influence peddling by a magistrate of the court. The Supreme Court report stated that besides advancing the drafting of the Code of Judicial Ethics, efforts will continue to be made to achieve the separation of judicial and executive functions.

The Supreme Court reported this at a press conference hosted by Minister Maria Soledad Melowho explained “Knowing the urgency required, it will continue to work towards the achievement of the above objectives and will refer appointments and other matters relating to judicial government to the organization established for the purpose.”

He added that, taking into account the facts that are known and disclosed through the media, “this Court considers it necessary to draft a Code of Judicial Ethics for our judiciary, based on the Iberian Code of Ethics.” Currently, it is American Airlines that governs us, so preparatory work began in April and thus a proposal was made to amend Act No. 262 of 2007, “Principles of Judicial Ethics” and the Ethics Committee.

Apart from, The meeting agreed to “form a working table with representatives of competition and appointment of different chambers of this Court to continue to study the amendments to the Minutes No. 104 and 105 of 2021 that address these issues.”based on the recommendations of the Research Bureau of this Court and the Human Resources Department of the Judicial Administration, to strengthen transparency mechanisms in accordance with the legal parameters and targets set for different positions.

Minister Melo commented that “the work of the mechanisms to ensure transparency and objectivity in the election of opponents has been completed and she will uphold this task, prompting the call for an extraordinary plenary session to be held this Wednesday.”
