For most students, the important holidays have arrived. Now the time is freer and there are all kinds of activities to make these three months the best time. Some look for seasonal jobs, others spend their time in leisure, starting with the beach. But more free time is also synonymous with activities inside and outside the home, especially video games, since we know that half of Europeans of all ages are dedicated to this activity.

Video games have several virtues. Played in a balanced way, they allow us to temporarily become explorers of worlds that don’t exist; top coaches or football players; time travelers; among many other things. And the experience doesn’t have to be solitary. In fact, it tends to be less and less so. The image of a person playing alone in the sun, for hours on end, seems like a truly wounding image, one that enters the realm of dangerous generalizations.

Playing online video games allows you to connect with friends who are far away, as is the case during the school holidays. It may even be the only way to stay in touch and company with colleagues on a daily basis during school. In the online version of video games it is also possible to play friendly matches with players from all over the world or, again, with our friends to test the quality of our gaming methods.

A new video game can also be an excuse to spend an afternoon or evening with friends, or a fun activity to do with the family. The possibilities are as endless as the types of video games that exist.

To deal with fear, today it is easy to let children take control without parents losing control. For example, more than 30,000 games are classified under the PEGI (Pan-European Games Information) age rating system, which was established in 2003 and can be downloaded as an app on iOS or Android. With this system, parents can know whether the game they are about to buy, or the game their children are about to buy or borrow, is appropriate for their age.

In addition to regulating their gaming time, it is also possible to protect the privacy and safety of young players through the various devices they are equipped with (video game consoles, portable devices, smartphones and tablets) because parental control systems are a customary reality.

For hundreds of thousands of people, video games are a very serious matter, a kind of work and with a long creative process, but for most of the world they are a source of great pleasure that can and should be played during the holidays.
