August 29, 2024 (Nairobi) – Both sides in Sudan’s conflict have committed war crimes, including summary executions, torture and mutilation of bodies, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said in a report released on Tuesday.
The New York-based rights group called on leaders of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to stop human rights violations and launch investigations. It also urged the UN Human Rights Council to extend the mandate of its fact-finding mission in Sudan.
The report, which analyses videos and photographs posted on social media, details mass executions and torture by both sides. It also documents the mutilation of bodies, including footage of Sudanese Armed Forces soldiers waving severed heads.
“The commanders must be held accountable for failing to prevent or punish these crimes,” said Mohammed Osman, Sudan researcher at Human Rights Watch.
Plans for a transition to civilian rule were shelved in April 2023 when fighting broke out between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Security Forces. The fighting has killed thousands of people and displaced millions.
The Human Rights Watch report provides more evidence of atrocities committed by both sides in the conflict. The United Nations has also accused both sides of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
The international community has condemned the violence and called for a ceasefire. However, peace talks have so far failed to produce a lasting agreement.
