August 18, 2024 (Port Sudan) – The head of Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Mohamed Hamdan Daglo aka “Hemetti”, warned on Sunday of escalatory measures to prevent the military from controlling the country’s future amid a stalemate in peace talks.
The warning comes as Sudan’s sovereign council decides to send a delegation to Cairo to discuss with US officials how to implement the Jeddah Declaration, a ceasefire agreement signed in May. The US had called for talks in Geneva on August 14, but the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) boycotted the meeting.
“We will not allow a group of terrified generals who have fled the capital to control the fate of our people,” Hemeti said in a post on X, formerly Twitter. “We will have many options and we will implement them whenever necessary.”
He accused Army Chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his allies of lacking the resolve to negotiate and being uncommitted to peace and stability in Sudan.
The RSF has been accused of massive human rights violations during the conflict, including ethnic cleansing, forced displacement and sexual violence. However, Hemetti reiterated his commitment to a negotiated end to the war.
He called on the international community to take a “decisive stand” against the Sudanese military’s contribution to the suffering of millions of Sudanese people and severely punish the military’s “reckless” behavior.
The Syrian army has refused to negotiate with the Rapid Security Forces unless they withdraw from civilian areas. The Syrian army has reportedly submitted proposals to Saudi and US mediators on the implementation of the Jeddah Declaration, including a timetable for the Rapid Security Forces to withdraw from major cities.
