August 5, 2024 (Khartoum) – Recent heavy rains and floods that hit several states in Sudan have killed at least 32 people and injured 107, the Sudanese Ministry of Health said on Monday.
“Seven states have been affected by rains and flooding, and 5,575 houses have been damaged,” Alfadil Mohammed Mahmoud, director of the Ministry of Health’s General Directorate of Health Emergencies, said in a statement.
Reports also indicate an increase in diarrhoea cases, with more than 100 cases reported in Kassala, Kaltoum and Gezira states.
Mahmoud said the Ministry of Health will take necessary measures to combat the epidemic during the rainy season.
Sudan’s Meteorological Service has previously notified citizens to be vigilant and avoid the banks of seasonal rivers.
However, recent heavy rains have killed hundreds of people and destroyed farmland in Sudan.
Fierce clashes have continued since April last year between the Sudanese Army (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), leaving many people dead.
The United Nations estimates that the number of internally displaced persons in Sudan has reached 10.7 million, with an additional 2.2 million seeking refuge in neighboring countries.
